This is a French oil on canvas that was probably executed in the late 18th century or early 19th century. It consists of an interior scene with an English frame and a French stretcher on the back. The title is “An After Dinner Story” by E J Donat, a relatively unknown artist, and the scene depicts a few gentlemen sitting around a table, feasting on a sumptuous meal, and talking about this or that. There are several paintings in the background, and these shed more light on the people in the painting and the times they lived in. When you see metal tags on the front of a piece, these were usually added in the 1930’s. The overall size is 27 3/8 x 37 1/4 in. wide and the sight size is 19 1/8 x 29 1/4 in. wide.
