He attended Dartmouth College and later studied at Oxford University and the Sorbonne, and became famous after serving in World War II for his playful rhymes and eccentric creatures. He revolutionized children’s literature by transforming basic early reader books into imaginative cultural touchstones like “The Cat in the Hat” and “Green Eggs and Ham.” Many of his works tackled complex social and political issues, including racial prejudice and environmental destruction, and by the time of his death in La Jolla, California on September 24th, 1991 he had won the Pulitzer Prize, two Emmy Awards, and three Academy Awards for his animated works, making him one of the most influential cartoonists of the 20th Century.
