David Hayes (1931–2013) was an American abstract sculptor renowned for his large-scale, brightly painted welded steel works that abstractly interpreted natural and organic forms. He earned his MFA from Indiana University, where he studied under David Smith, and was also deeply influenced by his friend and fellow sculptor Alexander Calder. Hayes's work is included in over 100 institutional collections, including the Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim Museum, with many of his monumental pieces exhibited at the David Hayes Sculpture Fields on his former Connecticut property.
