Dang Lebadang (1921 or 1922 – March 8, 2015) was a Vietnamese-born artist who became a naturalized French citizen and gained international acclaim for his richly textured mixed-media paintings, printwork, and sculptures. Born in Bích La Đông in Quảng Trị Province, he emigrated to France in 1939 to study at the École des Beaux-Arts in Toulouse. He held his first solo exhibition in Paris in 1950 and began receiving broader recognition after a landmark show at the Cincinnati Art Museum in 1966. Known for innovating techniques that blended embossing, lithography, etching, collage, and sculptural relief, Lebadang created artworks that fused Eastern and Western visual traditions, often depicting horses, landscapes, abstract forms, and elements drawn from Vietnamese memory and poetic symbolism. He received numerous honors during his lifetime, including being named Chevalier of the French Order of Arts and Letters in 1994, and in 1991 was proclaimed Honorary Citizen of New Orleans. His legacy includes a foundation and museum in his native Vietnam that permanently exhibits over 400 works produced across seven decades. His distinctive red signature seal, reminiscent of a Song Dynasty calligraphic chop, has become a recognizable hallmark of his work.
