Edward J. Wormley was an influential American designer who achieved great success by blending historical design elements with Mid Century Modern innovation. Born in Oswego, Illinois in 1907, he contracted polio at the age of five which gave him a permanent limp and had a profound impact on his desire to create simple, easy-to-use furniture and interior designs to accommodate people with similar afflictions. His early training was at the Art Institute of Chicago, followed by a short stint with Marshall Field’s before embarking on a long-standing partnership with the Dunbar Furniture Company. After leaving the wartime Office of Price Administration in 1944 he founded Edward Wormley and Associates, and throughout the 1950s his work gained significant recognition at the Museum of Modern Art’s “Good Design” exhibitions where thirty of his pieces eventually received prestigious designations. His personal life was defined by a lifelong relationship and partnership with Edward C. Crouse, with whom he shared a home in Connecticut until Crouse’s death in 1975. Wormley retired in 1967 and passed away in 1995.
