Cowell and Hubbard Co. began in Cleveland, Ohio in 1861 when the Cowell family acquired Royal Cowles's silversmith shop, originally founded in 1849. In 1879 when Addison T. Hubbard joined the firm the permanent name was adopted, and for then on they sold a wide variety of goods including fine jewelry and silverware. The Zale Corporation eventually purchased the firm via the Philadelphia-based Bailey, Banks & Biddle, turning it into a multimillion-dollar chain with ten stores in northern Ohio by the late 1970s. The main downtown Cleveland store was closed in January 1981, and Cowell & Hubbard has since continued to concentrate on their nine suburban Midwestern locations.
