Costa Rican rainforest masks, particularly those made by the Boruca people, are vibrant hand-carved and hand-painted masks traditionally used in the annual Danza de los Diablitos festival. Crafted from lightweight balsa wood, the masks depict both fierce ancestral spirits and the lush flora and fauna of the rainforest, including jaguars, birds, and serpents, symbolizing the connection between nature, community, and spiritual protection. Originally designed to represent indigenous resistance against Spanish colonizers, the masks now serve both ceremonial and artistic purposes, blending cultural identity with ecological motifs. Today, they are recognized as powerful expressions of indigenous heritage, creativity, and environmental awareness, while continuing to hold ritual importance within Boruca tradition.
