Contemporary Chinese rugs continue the traditions of ancient silk weavers, but with more precision and efficiency. They are sometimes referred to as “sculpted wool rugs” because of the fine details around the floral designs, and the tools used to make them. They are also most often referred to by their knot count, as 60 line, 90 line, 120 line, or more, with the higher the line count the softer the rug. They are usually thick, heavy, deep-piled, and are also referred to by the regional styles which dominate the looks: Beijing (sometimes using the previous romanized name Peking) with their dragons, floral patterns, and medallions; Ningxia, with geometric patterns, intricate borders, and frequently intertwined religious and imperial symbols; and Xinjiang, which use almost exclusively geometric patterns with strong contrasting colors. These areas continue to produce the majority of rugs in the country and were historically the major producers (and export locations) of the trade, as far back as the Han Dynasty.
