Cleve Gray (1918–2004) was an American painter associated with Abstract Expressionism, known for his lyrical, calligraphic style that blended elements of Eastern philosophy and Western abstraction. Born in New York City, Gray studied at Princeton University and later trained in Paris, where he was influenced by European modernists before returning to the United States. Over the course of his career, he developed a distinctive visual language marked by sweeping brushstrokes, layered surfaces, and a meditative sense of space, often inspired by his interest in Zen Buddhism and Asian art. Gray also worked as a writer and educator, contributing to critical discourse on contemporary art while producing a body of work that bridged cultural traditions and emphasized spontaneity and inner expression.
