Chryssa (1933–2013), born Chryssa Vardea-Mavromichali in Athens, Greece, was a pioneering Greek-American artist renowned for her contributions to light and kinetic sculpture. After studying painting and sculpture in Athens and later at Yale University, she moved to New York City in the late 1950s, where she became a central figure in the postwar avant-garde. Chryssa is best known for her large-scale works using neon, aluminum, and Plexiglas, transforming urban signage, letters, and symbols into abstract, immersive installations that explore the visual language of the modern city. Her iconic pieces, such as The Gates to Times Square (1966–1967), reflect a fusion of minimalist form, Pop sensibility, and architectural awareness. Throughout her career, she exhibited internationally, influencing generations of artists interested in light, space, and the intersection of language and abstraction.
