Christo and Jeanne-Claude (Christo: 1935–2020; Jeanne-Claude: 1935–2009) were a husband-and-wife artistic duo internationally renowned for creating large-scale environmental and public art installations that transformed landscapes, buildings, and public spaces. Born on the same day, June 13, 1935, in different countries—Christo in Gabrovo and Jeanne-Claude in Casablanca—they collaborated for more than five decades on ambitious projects characterized by temporary fabric wrappings and monumental interventions. Their best-known works include Wrapped Reichstag (1995), The Gates (2005), and Surrounded Islands (1983). Entirely self-funded through the sale of preparatory drawings and related works, their projects emphasized freedom, impermanence, and public engagement, attracting millions of visitors worldwide and securing their place among the most influential artists of the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries.
