Christine Tosa (Born 1950) Native American, Jemez Pueblo Pottery Vase. Incorporates her traditional family designs, with a checkerboard like pattern filled with alternating stripes, solids, and symbols around the top and middle. Interior and bottom third are blank. Signed on the bottom.
Condition: Excellent.
Size: 4 1/2 x 6 in.
Christine R. Tosa was born in 1950 into the Jemez Pueblo in New Mexico. She began experimenting with pottery making at the age of 12, learning all the fundamentals of hand coiling small bowls. She worked her way up to larger pottery, inspired to develop new designs by her mother-in-law, the late Persingula Tosa. She continues to dig up her own clay to mix, shape, paint, and fire her pottery outdoors, in the traditional way. Her traditional designs include birds, serpents, feathers, and other Jemez classics, and she began branching out into making wedding vases in her fifties. Today she is still working on the Pueblo, and has taught a new generation the skills, as her daughters Maxine and Jennifer Andrew have taken up the craft as well.
