Chris DeRubeis was born in 1978 in Santa Clarita, California. DeRubeis showed an early proclivity for drawing, and his grandfather, who was an amateur artist, fostered this talent with lessons every weekend throughout his early teens. At age 13 DeRubeis’ grandfather gave him his first airbrush, and after watching him use it, and by the time he was 16 DeRubeis was making money by airbrushing shirts at Six Flags Theme Park. Within a year he was the shirt store’s manager, balancing a lucrative job with the math and English lessons he was still taking in high school. After graduating he attended the Pasadena Art Center and the Associates in Art School in Sherman Oaks, paying for it by continuing to airbrush at the Park and working for a motorcycle builder in Los Angeles to paint custom motorcycles. While in art school DeRubeis realized that he didn’t want to duplicate any of the styles he was being taught, and sought to create something of his own. One day, while grinding the base paint off a motorcycle’s gas tank, he discovered the unique patterns the exposed metal made, intricately reflecting light. Inspired, DeRubeis began experimenting in his parent’s garage with different tools to manipulate the way light reacted with metallic surfaces, combining chemicals, pigments, and fire to create new reactions. After destroying his parent’s garage and nearly blowing up the house, his own personal style, dubbed Abstract Sensualism, was born. Now recognized around the world for his incredible blend of metal and paint, DeRubeis continues to live and work in California, with countless pieces on display in galleries, museums, hotels, and casinos in dozens of countries.
