Chinese Twin Handle Flambe Vase. Chinese porcelain flambe vase with sang de beouf neck glaze running into blue globular body with two small handles attached to neck, on pedestal foot. Unmarked.

A Chinese flambe vase is a type of ceramic vessel known for its striking, mottled glaze that mimics the unpredictable, flowing effect of molten or "flaming" color—hence the name. This glaze technique, also called Junyao or langyao (oxblood), became especially popular during the Qing dynasty under the reign of the Kangxi and Yongzheng emperors (late 17th to early 18th century), though it draws inspiration from earlier Song dynasty glazes. The flambe effect is achieved through high-temperature reduction firing, which causes copper-based glazes to streak and pool in shades of crimson, purple, lavender, and blue. Each piece is unique due to the spontaneous chemical reactions in the kiln, making flambe vases highly prized for their individual beauty and technical complexity. These vases were admired both in China and in the West, where they influenced Art Nouveau and studio pottery movements.
