The Chinese erhu is a traditional two-stringed bowed instrument, sometimes called the “Chinese violin,” known for its expressive, almost vocal tone. With a long vertical neck, no fingerboard, and a small resonating sound box traditionally covered with python skin, the erhu produces a wide range of sounds, from hauntingly melancholy to lively and bright. Originating over a thousand years ago, it became a central instrument in both classical Chinese ensembles and folk music, often featured in solos for its ability to convey deep emotion. Played with a horsehair bow that sits permanently between its two strings, the erhu remains a symbol of Chinese musical culture and continues to be performed in both traditional and contemporary compositions worldwide.
