A ruyi (“as you wish”) is a Chinese ceremonial scepter or talisman symbolizing power and good fortune, often seen in Buddhist and Daoist art. Traditionally shaped with a curved handle and a head like a fist, cloud, or lingzhi mushroom, ruyi have been made from materials such as jade, gold, ivory, and wood. Early versions appeared in Buddhist art by the Six Dynasties, with the modern decorative form developing in the Song Dynasty. Today, they remain important cultural symbols, with highly elaborate examples preserved in museums and collections.
