Chinese Figural Soapstone and Alabaster Seated Buddha Sculpture. Soapstone carving of the Buddha in Dharmachakra mudra (hands over chest) on alabaster base. Drilled through base to be fitted for lamp. 

Condition: Commensurate with age. 

Size: 3 1/2 x 2 1/4 x 7 3/4 in.

The Dharmachakra mudra, also known as the "gesture of turning the wheel of Dharma," symbolizes the Buddha's first sermon at Sarnath, where he set the wheel of Dharma in motion. This mudra represents the teaching and dissemination of Buddhist principles. It is typically performed with both hands held near the chest, with the thumbs and index fingers forming circles, signifying the interconnectedness of all things and the cyclical nature of existence. The remaining fingers point outward, symbolizing the transmission of wisdom and knowledge to others. This gesture is deeply associated with the path to enlightenment and the sharing of spiritual truths.
