Chinese Enameled Polychrome Bronze Vase. Chinese bronze vase with enameled polychrome inlay depicting a waterscape with animals and reeds. Two ring handles. On pedestal foot. Unmarked.

Chinese bronze vases are revered artifacts that reflect the rich artistic and ceremonial traditions of ancient China, particularly during the Shang (c. 1600–1046 BCE) and Zhou (c. 1046–256 BCE) dynasties. Crafted using sophisticated casting techniques, including piece-mold casting, these vessels often served both ritualistic and decorative purposes. Bronze vases were commonly used in ancestral offerings, holding wine or water during sacred ceremonies. Their forms vary—from elegant, slender gu vases to robust hu and fangyi shapes—and they are often adorned with intricate motifs such as taotie masks, dragons, phoenixes, and cloud patterns, which held symbolic meanings of power, protection, and spiritual connection. Over time, bronze vases became more ornate, especially during the Han and later dynasties, blending function with aesthetic sophistication. Today, they are prized for their historical, artistic, and cultural significance, offering a window into ancient Chinese cosmology and craftsmanship.
