Often depicted as a cheerful, elderly man with a high, domed forehead, a flowing beard, and carrying a staff and a peach—an emblem of immortality—Shoulao embodies the wish for a long and fulfilling life. Frequently accompanied by deer or cranes, animals associated with longevity, he appears in paintings, sculptures, and decorative arts, especially during festivals and on auspicious gifts.
