Antique Indian Mughal Swan Form Ewer.
Bronze ewer in the shape of a mythical swan or goose, with long necked spout and thin serpentine handle.
Size: 11 1/4 x 11 1/2 x 4 in.
Deccani swan ewers are exquisite vessels from the Deccan region of India, produced between the 16th and 18th centuries under the patronage of the sultanates that flourished there. Crafted primarily in metal—often brass, bronze, or bidriware inlaid with silver—these ewers take the form of a swan or goose (hamsa), a bird deeply symbolic in Indian art as a representation of purity, wisdom, and divine knowledge. The bodies of these vessels were ingeniously shaped so that the bird’s gracefully arched neck formed the spout, while intricate incised or inlaid patterns adorned the surface. Both functional and decorative, Deccani swan ewers embody the fusion of Persian, Islamic, and indigenous Indian design elements, reflecting the cosmopolitan culture of the Deccan courts and standing as rare, highly prized examples of Indo-Islamic metalwork.
