Chinese Bronze Censer with Dragons and Foo Dog. Chinese bronze censer with dragons on body carved in high relief, dragon-form handles, and foo dog finial. On three raised paw feet. Marked underside with impressed six-character mark.

Chinese censers, known as xianglu, are intricately crafted vessels designed for burning incense, playing a vital role in religious rituals, ancestor worship, and daily life throughout Chinese history. Often made from bronze, porcelain, or cloisonné, censers vary widely in size and style—from simple tripod bowls to elaborate, ornate containers shaped like mythical creatures or adorned with auspicious symbols. The fragrant smoke rising from the incense is believed to purify the space, communicate with the divine, and create a meditative atmosphere. Highly prized during the Tang, Song, and Ming dynasties, censers were both practical objects and works of art, reflecting the Chinese appreciation for harmony, spirituality, and the transformative power of scent. Their design balances form and function, symbolizing the connection between the earthly and the spiritual realms.
