Cape Verde, officially known as Cabo Verde, is an island country located in the central Atlantic Ocean, approximately 570 kilometers (350 miles) off the western coast of Africa. Comprising ten volcanic islands and several islets, the archipelago was uninhabited until it was discovered and colonized by the Portuguese in the 15th century. It gained independence in 1975 and is now a stable democratic republic. The islands are divided into two groups: the windward Barlavento islands and the leeward Sotavento islands. Cape Verde's terrain is rugged and mountainous, and its climate is generally arid, though it varies across islands. The country has a mixed economy based on services, remittances, and growing tourism, and it is known for its vibrant Creole culture, music (especially morna), and linguistic diversity, with both Portuguese and Cape Verdean Creole widely spoken.
