Charles Paul Gruppe (1860–-1940) was a Canadian-born American artist renowned for his marine and landscape paintings, particularly those inspired by his time in the Netherlands. Born in Picton, Ontario, he moved to Rochester, New York, at age three. Self-taught, he studied in Holland, where he became a leading figure among American artists painting in the Netherlands. His work, characterized by soft brushwork and a dark, Dutch-inspired palette, earned him recognition in both Europe and America. Gruppe's paintings are held in various public collections, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Detroit Institute of Arts. He was also the father of artist Emile Albert Gruppe.
