Nat spirits are a class of supernatural beings venerated in Myanmar (Burma), deeply rooted in pre-Buddhist animist traditions but later integrated into Burmese Buddhism. These spirits, often the souls of people who died tragic or violent deaths, are believed to have lingering power and influence over the natural and human world. There are officially 37 "Great Nats" in the Burmese pantheon, each with their own personalities, backstories, and areas of patronage, though local regions often have additional, lesser-known spirits. Nats are honored through festivals, shrines, music, and ritual offerings, typically involving food, flowers, and dance performed by nat kadaw (spirit mediums). While Buddhist doctrine emphasizes detachment and karma, nat worship reflects a more immediate, worldly spirituality—one focused on appeasing powerful forces to ensure protection, good fortune, or healing. This syncretic blend continues to shape the spiritual landscape of Myanmar today.
