In 1919 master goldsmith Mario Buccellati opened his first enterprise in Milan, soon followed by stores in Rome and Florence. In 1949 he was commissioned to create an icon by Pope Pius XII for Princess Margaret to mark the first visit of a British Royal to the Vatican City in hundreds of years, which is now held by the Chianciano Art Museum in Tuscany. In 1954 he opened his first store in the U.S. on Fifth Avenue in New York, following it with one in Palm Beach, Florida in 1958. Mario passed away in 1965, leaving four of his five sons to continue the business. In 1971 Gianmaria, the fifth son, launched his own brand with stores in Australia and Asia, eventually consolidating with the original company in 2011 to form Buccellati Holding Italia. In 2019 Richemont acquired the company, and they continue to produce jewelry, watches, silverware and other household items today.
