Set of twenty-five (25) Crusade cutlery pieces, including twelve (12) forks, twelve (12) sterling butter knives, and one (1) sterling bread knife. Pieces with matched bone handles. Manufactured by Sheffield. Condition: One knife with broken handle, pictured.

Samuel Viner (1886-1969) was born in Germany to Ludwig and Emily Viner, who launched the silversmithing company Viners. In 1891 the family was living in Norwich, English where Ludwig was an auctioneer, before moving to Sheffield to get involved in creating cutlery. In 1922 Samuel started an electro-plate company on Eldon Street, and by the 1930s the company (now called Wentworth Plate Co Ltd) employed roughly fifty workers. During World War II the company name changed to Crusade Cutlery Ltd, manufacturing cutlery, spoons, forks, canteens, cabinets, hotel ware, butchers’ and trade knives and flatware.
