Bruce Winston Hafley was born in Atlanta, Georgia on August 30th, 1920, and lived there nearly all his life. He graduated from Georgia Tech in 1942 and served with the U.S. Army in France as an Engineer, returning home with his wife Charlotte after studying painting and drawing at the Royal Academy in the Hague once World War II was over. He became a regional sensation for his countless portraits of famous figures and state luminaries, creating Renaissance-style portraits with a touch of whimsy that wound up in the Georgia State Capitol, the National Gallery in Washington, D.C., and many private and public collections throughout the South. Tragically, exposure to chemicals during the war contributed to him developing a long-lasting illness in the mid 1970s, and he died at Emory Hospital after a long battle with it on June 28th, 2011.
