André Elbaz was born on April 26th, 1934 in El Jadida, Morocco, and moved to Rabat to study theater in 1950 for five years before relocating to Paris to study art until 1961. After meeting his wife, a psychiatrist exploring art therapy, the two combined his mutual passions into a new approach deemed Pictodrama, which brought them world recognition. His first solo exhibition was in Casablanca in 1961 and earned him an appointment as Professor at the Beaux-Arts school in Casablanca, as well as a long-lasting relationship with the Tel Aviv Museum. He became a highly successful filmmaker concurrent with his career as a visual artist, focusing on Jewish themes in an expressionist style, and continues to divide his time between home studios in France, Canada, and Morocco.
