Bertha Jaques (1863–1941) was an American artist and pioneering printmaker known for her contributions to the revival of etching in the United States. Born Bertha Clausen in Covington, Ohio, she studied painting before discovering etching at the 1893 Chicago World's Columbian Exposition. Inspired by the works of artists like James Whistler and Anders Zorn, she began experimenting with etching techniques, using tools crafted from surgical instruments provided by her husband, a physician. In 1894, she produced her first etching, marking the beginning of a prolific career. Jaques was instrumental in founding the Chicago Society of Etchers in 1910, an organization dedicated to promoting etching as a respected art form. Her work encompassed botanical studies, urban landscapes, and photograms, reflecting her keen observation and technical skill. Jaques's legacy endures through her extensive body of work, with over 400 prints held in the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art and exhibitions at institutions like the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
