Addison Mizner (1872-1933) was an American architect and designer celebrated for popularizing the Mediterranean Revival and Spanish Colonial Revival styles in Florida during the early 20th century. Born in California and raised partly in Central America, he developed a love for Spanish and Moorish architecture that profoundly shaped his later work. After initially working in New York on luxury homes, Mizner moved to Palm Beach in 1918, where he transformed the architectural character of the region with opulent, romantic designs featuring stucco walls, red-tiled roofs, wrought iron, and lush courtyards. His most famous projects include the Everglades Club and numerous grand estates that catered to wealthy clients of the 1920s Florida land boom. Though his development ventures ended in financial trouble, Mizner’s distinctive vision left a lasting imprint on Florida’s architectural identity, blending Old World elegance with a relaxed tropical atmosphere.
