Ben Stahl (1910-1987) American, Luminist Illustration of an Interior Gouache. Titled "Black Beards Ghost". Dimly lit indoor scene with several figures gathered around a table. The pirate Black Beard appears to be a ghost in the upper left looking at them all, and a man on the right appears scared pointing in the direction of Black Beard. 
Back of the piece includes an old Sarasota Bank & Trust Company check made out to Ben Stahl for $75.

Benjamin Albert Stahl (1910–1987) was a celebrated American artist and illustrator who began his training at the Art Institute of Chicago at age twelve and later taught at several prestigious institutions. He served as an official U.S. Air Force artist during World War II and went on to illustrate for major publications like The Saturday Evening Post and books including Gone with the Wind. In 1969, his life was marked by tragedy when 13 of his 15 large-scale religious paintings were stolen from the Museum of the Cross he built in Sarasota, Florida—an unsolved crime that left him in financial ruin. Stahl was also a founding faculty member of the Famous Artists School, hosted a television series, and was admired by peers like Bob Ross for his exceptional talent.
