20th Century Japanese Mixed Media Repeating Pattern on Washi Paper. Ink, and watercolor are combined to create an image of an army traveling near a fog-shrouded town, with incredible blooming cherry blossoms above them. The style was popular throughout the mid 20th Century and heavily inspired by Chinese and Japanese wallpaper designs from as early as the 18th Century, and these patterns often wound up on Byobu folding screens, although the use of the extremely high quality washi paper may be why this was framed instead of stretched on a screen.

Condition: Excellent.

Overall Size: 32 1/4 x 44 3/4 in.

Sight Size: 26 x 36 in.

Washi is traditional Japanese paper processed by hand using fibers from the inner bark of the gampi tree, the mitsumata shrub (Edgeworthia chrysantha), or the paper mulberry (kōzo) bush. Washi is generally tougher than ordinary paper made from wood pulp, and is used in many traditional arts. Origami, shodō, and ukiyo-e were all produced using washi. Washi was also used to make various everyday goods like clothes, household goods, and toys, as well as vestments and ritual objects for Shinto priests and statues of Buddha. Washi is also used to repair historically valuable cultural properties, paintings, and books at museums and libraries around the world because of its thinness, pliability, and apparent durability lasting over 1000 years with proper care. By the 7th Century, ancient papermaking techniques had been introduced to Japan from China via the Korean Peninsula, and the Japanese developed washi in the Heian period.

Excellent.
