Benjamin “Ben” Breard was born in Dallas, Texas on July 4th, 1946 and studied journalism at Northwestern University before becoming interested in photography, obtaining his B.S. and going on to earn his M.S. in Communications Photography from Syracuse University. Returning to Dallas, he opened Afterimage Gallery in 1971 and became a prominent figure in the photography world, known for promoting both emerging and established photographers like Ansel Adams, Henri-Cartier-Bresson, and George Tice. He was an early adopter of the internet for art sales, first placing works for sale online in 1997, and operated his gallery for nearly 50 years before transitioning to an online-only model after cancer surgery and the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Today he continues to sell from his home in Richardson, Texas, and is considered a living legend of the American art scene, highly influential in guiding and inspiring multiple generations of new photographers.
