Barbara Putnam Hayes van Winkelen (1919–2010) was an American painter, illustrator, designer, teacher, and gallery owner whose work spanned watercolors, egg tempera, oils, etchings, and pen-and-ink drawings. Born in Newton, Massachusetts, she grew up in Connecticut and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Yale University’s School of Fine Art in 1943, later working briefly at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and serving with the American Red Cross in England during World War II, where she painted murals and organized art therapy programs. After returning to the United States she worked as a technical illustrator, taught art, and became deeply involved in regional arts communities, winning numerous exhibition prizes and professional honors. For three decades she operated the Spindrift Art Gallery on Nantucket Island and created a diverse body of work—including still lifes, floral subjects, cats, Nantucket and historical Connecticut scenes—that appears in private, corporate, and museum collections; she was also a member of the American Watercolor Society, National Watercolor Society, New England Watercolor Society, and many other art organizations.
