Antonio Mancini (1852–1930) was a major Italian painter associated with the Verismo tradition and celebrated for his intensely expressive portraits and scenes of everyday life. Born in Rome, he showed exceptional artistic ability as a child and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples under Domenico Morelli and Filippo Palizzi, where he developed an interest in the dramatic lighting and rich tonal effects of seventeenth-century painting. His early work frequently depicted poor children, street performers, and other figures from Neapolitan life, rendered with remarkable sympathy and realism. Mancini exhibited in Paris and spent periods in London, where he became a close associate of John Singer Sargent, who greatly admired his work and helped promote his reputation. In later years his brushwork became increasingly vigorous and unconventional, with thick impasto, brilliant color, and experimental use of materials such as glass and fabric. His paintings are represented in major collections including the National Gallery in London and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
