This is a large unsigned oil on board Florida landscape that we have attributed to Mary Ann Carroll, the only female member of the group of African American artists known as the Florida Highwaymen. We have three other Highwaymen paintings in the auction, including one by Mary Ann Carroll, and we believe this one was done by her as well. The painting here features a red poinciana, also called a royal poinciana or flame tree, and Mary was known for her versions of this tree. It's possible the landscape was painted by Charles Walker, another of the Florida Highwaymen group, but Mary's brushstrokes were much more refined than Charles, and the poinciana here is done in fine detail, so we attribute the painting to Mary Ann Carroll. She was born to a share-cropping family in Georgia, learned how to paint from Alfred Hair, one of the original Highwaymen, and took odd jobs to survive while her paintings helped pay the bills. She was a pastor at various churches, and in 2012 was recognized by the White House for her skills and grit, and she was inducted into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame in 2004. The overall size is 25 1/2 x 37 1/2 in. wide and the sight size is 23 x 34 7/8 in.
