Arthur Clifton Goodwin (1864–1929) was an American painter best known for his impressionistic depictions of early 20th‑century urban life, particularly the street scenes and waterfronts of Boston and later New York City. Born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and largely self‑taught, Goodwin developed a distinctive style that captured the subtle interplay of light and atmosphere in cityscapes, docks, parks, and bridges using both oil and pastel, and was associated with American Impressionism and the Ashcan School. A member of groups such as the Guild of Boston Artists and the Boston Society of Water Color Painters, he exhibited widely and gained recognition from contemporaries including John Singer Sargent, though his bohemian lifestyle and personal struggles often overshadowed his career. His works are now held in major museums including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and he is remembered for his evocative, plein‑air urban scenes.
