Arlie Gray was born in Kentucky in 1917. He grew up on his family’s ranch, where he developed a love of horses that eventually led him to study art so he could portray them. Gray became a painter, teacher, and author, publishing four books to teach and inspire others to paint: “Drawing and Painting Horses,” “Still-Life Painting,” “Portrait Painting,” and “Equine Art How-To.” Later in life, facing some health concerns, he moved to Florida, finally settling in Sarasota in the 1970s to be close to the artist’s colony there. He became known for his vibrant naturalistic depictions of the Florida and Appalachian countryside, painting beaches and swamps with equal clarity. He passed away at his home in 1998, which has since been turned into a historical landmark, and his work can be seen in the Museum of Florida History, as well as in countless public and private collections throughout the Southeast.
