Ardis Hughes was born on January 3rd, 1912 in Rhineback, New York, and found himself drawn to art from an early age. He graduated from the Pratt Institute in 1934 and went to work as an illustrator for Esquire Magazine, but his war bonds posters and propaganda for the U.S. Army eventually led him to be sent to Paris to do architectural work, where his style finally solidified and flourished. When he returned to the States he apprenticed with Saul Tepper before devoting himself solely to fine art, winning awards for his oils and watercolors and dividing his time between Spain and Saratoga Springs until worsening health led him to relocate to St. Augustine, Florida, where he died on January 4th, 2009. Today his works are held in many private and public collections, including an extensive set in the Anne S. K. Brown Military Collection at Brown University and the New York State Military Museum.
