April Surgent (born 1982 in Missoula, Montana) is a contemporary American glass artist renowned for her mastery of cameo-engraved glass. After beginning with blown glass in 1997, she pivoted in 2003 to engraving under the mentorship of Czech master Jiří Harcuba at the Pilchuck Glass School. Surgent earned a BFA with honors from the Australian National University in 2004 and has since developed a deeply research-based practice that explores climate change, marine ecology, and vulnerable ecosystems. Her work—characterized by delicately engraved landscapes, sea ice, stormy horizons, and oceanic imagery—has been exhibited internationally, including solo shows at the Bellevue Arts Museum (2010) and Chrysler Museum of Art (2012), and featured in museum collections such as the Corning Museum of Glass, Toledo Museum of Art, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Her accomplishments include the 2009 Behnke Foundation Neddy Fellowship, a 2016 USA Fellowship, and a 2013 residency at Palmer Station through the NSF Antarctic Artists & Writers Program. Living and working on Washington’s Olympic Peninsula, Surgent continues to blend art and science through her work and educational outreach.
