Antoinette Von Grone was born in a small village in Northern Germany, and attended the College of Applied Arts in Hannover and the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, Austria. She took her degree in Textile Design to Paris, France where she then earned a degree in Fashion Design. After working for Hermes-Paris in 1979 she took a job with Club Med teaching batik and weaving in Morocco. There she discovered the technique of painting on silk, and in 1981 started her own design studio in Hamburg, Germany. In the 1990s she moved to California, where she designed scarves for Bogner, Hermes, Leonard and other international fashion and accessory brands. After transitioning from silk and high fashion to paintings and murals, she began to have work exhibited at Erickson Fine Art Gallery in Healdsburg and in private collections around San Francisco. In 1995 she married the writer Thom Elkjer, and currently lives and works in the wine country of Mendocino County.
