Antique Map Showing California as an Island, Edward Wells (1667-1727) English, "A New Map of North America Showing its Principle Divisions". Double page engraved map with hand coloring. Sheet size: 15 x 20 in. "From the 1550's to the 1700's, global mapmakers labored under the misconception that California was an island rather than a part of mainland North America. Originally caused by confusion over the Baja Peninsula, the error was perpetuated by the idea that California represented an "earthly paradise" separate from the rest of the world."
