A tantalus is a small wooden cabinet designed to hold and display decanters while securing them behind a lock and key. The device was intended to prevent unauthorized individuals, such as servants or children, from accessing the alcohol while keeping the contents visible. Its name references the Greek mythological figure Tantalus, symbolizing the frustration of having desired objects just out of reach. First patented in 1879 by John Betjemann, the cabinets were produced at his family's workshops in London, and authentic antique examples are rare and highly collectible today, often featuring brass or silver stamps and selling for thousands of dollars at auction.
