Antique French Rouen Faience Jardinière. Likely produced in the 19th or early 20th Century, inspired by Louis XV designs, this piece features vibrant hand-painted décor and elegant sculptural handles. Marked Rouen and numbered "1644" on the underside.

Rouen, Normandy, established itself as a major European center for tin-glazed earthenware (faience) starting in the 1540s, led initially by the workshop of Masséot Abaquesne. The industry entered a new phase in 1644 when a 50-year royal monopoly was granted to Edme Poterat, whose family popularized the signature “lambrequin” style of intricate border decoration. Following the expiration of the monopoly in 1697, numerous factories emerged, launching Rouen’s golden age characterized by high-quality craftsmanship, vibrant polychrome painting, and distinct designs like the cornucopia-themed à la corne. By the mid 18th Century the city’s production expanded dramatically, exporting ornate tableware and decorative pieces while influencing workshops across Europe. However, stiff competition from cheaper, more durable English creamware after a 1786 trade agreement severely undermined the French market, causing the Rouen ceramic industry to rapidly decline by the end of the 18th Century. Today there are still a small number of production facilities there catering to a niche market, but antique pieces are also highly collectible and sought at auctions around the world.
