Antique Automatic Scale Co. Iron and Brass Cat-Eared Grocer's Scale.
Old cat-eared grocer’s scales, with their distinctive twin upward-curving metal points resembling feline ears, were once a common sight in small shops and market stalls, used to weigh produce, dry goods, and other essentials. These mechanical balance scales often featured a large, shallow tray on one side and a set of sliding weights or counterbalances on the other, allowing for precise manual measurement long before the advent of digital scales. The “cat-ear” design, aside from being visually memorable, helped support and stabilize the weighing platform, giving the instrument a charming, utilitarian elegance. Today, these scales are prized as nostalgic artifacts, evoking a tactile, slower-paced era of commerce grounded in trust, routine, and neighborhood familiarity.
