Angie Dixon was born in Seattle, Washington in 1953, and began drawing and painting in early childhood. She went on to earn dual degrees in Fine Art and Art History from the University of Washington in 1976, where she was introduced to sumi painting on rice paper by George Tsutakawa. She worked as a commercial fisherman in Alaska to save up money to travel to Japan and spent many years studying under calligraphers and painters, before continuing graduate studies in Asian Brush and Ink Painting at the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Art in Hangzhou, China in 1984, one of the first Americans ever admitted. Since then she has held exhibitions all over the world and taught classes in Sumi Painting, with her unique style molded by traditional techniques and inspiration from the Pacific Northwest lauded by many critics and inspiring new generations of artists on multiple continents, and divides her time between her studio in Seattle and another in Sarasota, Florida.
