Harris G. Strong (1920-2006) was an American artist known for his innovative ceramic tile paintings, prints, and woodcuts. Born in Waukesha, Wisconsin, he developed an early interest in art, influenced by his aunt, who owned a greeting card company. During World War II, he served as a cryptographer under General Douglas MacArthur. After the war, he studied ceramics and glaze chemistry at North Carolina State University, which led to a career at Kelby Pottery in Brooklyn, New York. Strong eventually established his own business, opening showrooms in Chicago, New York, and Tokyo, and creating notable works such as a 30-foot-long ceramic tile mural for the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City. In 1970, he moved to Trenton, Maine, where a fire destroyed his glaze formulas, prompting a shift to prints, serigraphs, woodcuts, etchings, collages, and paintings. His work is included in collections at institutions like the High Museum of Art and the Brooklyn Museum. His son Andre (born 1952) continued in his footsteps, primarily focused on photography but also exploring sculpture, textiles, and creating lithographs of his father's work.
