Alice Worthington Ball was born in Boston in 1869. She studied under Benson and Tarbell at the Art Museum. After studying at Colarossi's in Paris under Colin and Courtois, she finally developed her own style in Holland studying under George Hitchcock. Immersed in the rolling clouds, flower fields and ribbon-like canals reflecting in their depths the frowning windmills, she was later compelled to move to Sicily due to her love of color. After World War I she returned to the United States, inspired by cityscapes from Maryland to all the way up to Quebec, before eventually retiring to Gloucester, where she died in 1929. Considered unlikely to live long due to a “frail constitution,” she attacked her subjects with speed and veracity, painting even in her last year as her health rapidly deteriorated. This piece demonstrates her sense of movement and her pleasure in rich, vibrant colors.
