Albert Melville Graves was born in Holyoke. Massachusetts in November of 1862. His family moved to Chicopee where Graves was educated in local schools. He spent four years studying at Boston's Normal Art School and an additional year of study in various art schools and studios in Boston. He resided in Massachusetts until his death in 1950, but traveled all over the world with his niece, Eunice Harriet Avery, who went on to become a famous lecturer. He often traveled to islands, from the Pacific to the Caribbean, to find inspiration for his works. He rarely sold works in his lifetime, with most found in collections near his home town. His rough style focused on the unforgiving yet beautiful climates of the islands, and the people who made them their home.
