Alfonso Meléndez Arana (1927–2005) was a painter of Mexican and Puerto Rican descent known for his distinctive expressionist and mannerist style. Born in New York City, he spent his youth in San Sebastián, Puerto Rico, and studied art in Mexico, New York, Paris (Académie Julian and École des Beaux-Arts), and Washington, D.C. His paintings often feature ghostly figures with mask-like faces, hollow almond-shaped eyes, and slightly oversized, ethereal bodies rendered in transparent, almost spiritual colors. Arana’s work combined mythological themes, Caribbean sensibility, and biblical subjects; in 1986 he founded the Fundación Alfonso Arana to nurture young Puerto Rican artists, and in 2001 he was honored by the French government with the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
